Learn About Your Land is a series of classes from UW-Madison Extension Forestry intended for Wisconsin woodland owners. These classes introduce landowners to forestry topics and local DNR foresters. All classes will run about 1 hour with the last 15 minutes reserved for YOUR QUESTIONS. The classes this December will feature DNR foresters from Waupaca, Vernon, and Richland Counties.
Session 1 – INVASIVE PLANT IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL
Tuesday, December 1, 7–8 pm CST
Do you know what nonnative, invasive plants look like? Do you have invasive plants and want to learn how to control them? If so, then this class is for you. We will describe the most problematic invasive plants for woodlands in Wisconsin and recommend ways to
control them.
Session 2 – PEOPLE/PROGRAMS/PLANNING: ASSISTANCE WITH YOUR WOODLAND
Thursday, December 3, 7–8 pm CST
The creation of a healthy woodland requires knowledge of forestry techniques and investment of time and money. This session will link you to the people, programs and organizations that offer technical and financial assistance for all aspects of your woodland. We will look at the beginning steps of woodland management and identify resources to help make your vision a reality.
Session 3 – GETTING WOODLAND INFORMATION FROM THE WEB
Tuesday, December 8, 7–8 pm CST
There is a lot of great information on the web, but sometimes it can be difficult to find exactly what you need. This class will provide insights into some of the best resources for getting your questions answered and connect you with the technical resources available to all woodland owners.
Session 4 – SUCCESS WITH TREE PLANTING
Thursday, December 10, 7–8 pm CST
This session will identify the steps needed to successfully establish new trees. Learn which trees will grow best on your land, how to prepare your land, techniques for planting and how to care for newly planted trees. Reach out to your local forester to access tree planting tools that will make the job easier.
Session 5 – INVITE WILDLIFE TO YOUR WOODLAND
Tuesday, December 15, 7–8 pm CST
Learn to enhance your woodlands to attract a variety of wildlife. This session identifies the four requirements to attracting wildlife to your land— space, water, food and shelter—and offers tips on how to manage your woods to improve the wildlife potential.
Session 6 – INTRODUCTION TO TIMBER HARVESTING AND SALES
Thursday, December 17, 7–8 pm CST
Learn how to decide which, if any, trees should be selected for cutting and why. Gain an understanding of what is meant by thinning, selection harvest, group selection harvest, clear cut and shelterwood harvest. You will be introduced to the steps and timeline involved in conducting a successful timber sale, from deciding what to harvest to final
closeout of your sale.

Fees must be paid by November 30 to access the first week of classes.
We will host a technical check-in the night before the first class so participants can test the virtual classroom.
