If you have anywhere from 5 to 20 acres of woodland, we consider that to be a small woodlot. Although some opportunities are only available for larger acreages, you still have a plethora of management projects to consider!

In early 2026, UW–Madison Extension and the Wisconsin DNR developed a three-part series of classes specifically for small woodlot owners. The series addresses woodland owners’ common concerns and questions, giving you advice and resources to steward your land. Explore this page to watch the recordings and access the resources we shared.

What to look for in your woods

Whether you have owned your woodland for years or you’re just getting started, this video offers a clear first step in understanding what to look for when walking through your woods. You will learn how to identify common Wisconsin tree species, including by using a dichotomous key in the field. After an overview of why invasive species pose risks to woodlands, you’ll learn to recognize invasive plants that threaten forest health and spot early signs of disease, pests, or other concerns. All this guidance will help you observe and support the long-term health of your small woodlot.

People and programs to support your woodland goals

In this video, discover how to set clear goals for your property. Then, learn about state, federal, and other programs: what they offer, how they work, and eligibility requirements. These programs can help with developing management plans, learning new skills, addressing priorities on your land, and connecting with additional groups around woodland stewardship. By the end, you will learn about practical next steps so you can confidently begin (or continue) your stewardship journey, supported by a network of professionals, educators, agencies, and even online tools!

How to improve your woodland and control invasive plants

Learn proven strategies and explore a range of control options to keep your woodland healthy. Building on your invasive plant identification skills, this video will show you how to take the next step—effective control. You’ll dive into practical techniques you can apply, including hand-pulling, mowing, girdling, and herbicide use. You’ll get tips for choosing the right approach for each situation, following best management practices, and integrating these practices into an effective long-term plan for your property. You will also learn how invasive plant management connects to broader stewardship goals like supporting native species.
