Learn About Your Land is a UW-Madison Extension Forestry program intended for Wisconsin woodland owners. The series of classes introduces landowners to forestry topics and local DNR foresters. These classes will be held in person and online in Ladysmith, WI. All classes will run 1.5 hours with the last 30 minutes reserved for YOUR QUESTIONS. Registration is $30 per person for all four sessions. Please double-check the county location when you register.

A healthy woodland requires knowledge of forestry techniques and investment of time and money. This session will link you to the people, programs, and organizations that offer technical and financial assistance for all aspects of your woods. We will also go over the benefits of having a management plan and walk you through the steps to getting one for your woods. 

Introduction To Timber Harvesting and Sales

Learn how to decide which, if any, trees to cut and why. Gain an understanding of concepts like thinning, selection harvest, group selection harvest, clear cut, and shelterwood harvest. Learn the benefits of removing some trees as well as the reasons for not cutting others. We’ll cover the steps and timeline for a successful timber sale, from deciding on what to harvest to final closeout of your sale. This workshop will provide guidance on selecting a logger, why a timber sale contract is important, and the supervisory steps involved in conducting a harvest.

Invasive Species Identification and Control

Are you having problems identifying and controlling invasive plants on your property?” If so, then this class is for you. We will describe the most problematic invasive plants for woodlands in Wisconsin and recommend ways to control them.

Keeping Your Woods Healthy: The Signs and Symptoms of Sick Trees 

Tuesday, September 23, 2025 6-8PM

A healthy woodland provides many benefits. Is yours healthy? Do you have injured or dying trees? Your woods may look fine, but is it healthy? This session will review insects, diseases, animals, non-native invasive species, environmental factors, and improper woodland management that can affect the health of your woodland. You will leave knowing signs and symptoms of sick trees, and who to call if you have a concern.
