How To Manage Jack Pine

PDF logo for missing cover image

Describes the management techniques for jack pine, a very intolerant pioneer species typically found on dry sandy soils. When mature, even-aged stands of jack pine are commonly harvested by clearcutting, although the shelterwood and seed-tree methods are sometimes used. Selection cutting usually does not work because jack pine grows poorly or not at all in the shade of other trees. Regeneration comes from natural seedfall, direct seeding or by planting seedlings. Information on wildlife and aesthetics is also included.
